Magic Q&A

This section of our site is aimed at answering common questions that people have about magic and tricks in general. If you have a question that you would like to add to this list please let us know. No specific trick secrets will be revealed but otherwise please feel free to submit any questions that you like.

Q. What's the best learning format?

This is a great question. In the ‘old days’ (by this I mean over 20 years ago) most magic was learned from magic magazines and from magic books. So the learning medium was of course reading.

Reading is really a fantastic way of learning since it stimulates the mind and does require a little concentration. This can increase the sense of achievement and that good feeling when you have read through a routine and finally master it. Good illustrations are generally needed to help alongside the descriptions – especially where sleight of hand moves are concerned.

Obviously nowadays visual technology such as videos and dvd and the internet are widely available. These purely visual learning techniques are easy to follow and do not require as much effort on the part of the student to learn. The disadvantage however is that learning this way can often result in a lack of details.

Written instructions will contain careful descriptions of all the moves needed to perform the effect or move. During the filming of videos and dvds, often the important small details might be left out.

So, the best learning method would be a combination of these 2 ways – pure visual instruction combined with written instructions.

This is exactly how we have put together our very popular Magic CD ROM called Pure Astonishment. It contains both video clips and text to provide the best possible learning experience giving you the fullest details and making it as easy as possible to learn.
